Dimitar Ivanov Berbatov (Bulgarian: born 30 January 1981) is a Bulgarian footballer who plays as a striker forFulham. He captained the Bulgarian national team from 2006 to 2010, and is its all-time leading goalscorer and has also won the Bulgarian Footballer of the Year a record seven times, surpassing the number of wins by Hristo Stoichkov.

Born in Blagoevgrad, Berbatov started out with home-town club Pirin before joiningCSKA Sofia as a 17-year-old in 1998. He was signed by Bayer Leverkusen of Germany in January 2001 and played in his first Champions League final 18 months later, coming on as a substitute in the 2002 UEFA Champions League Final, which Leverkusen lost 2–1 to Real Madrid. After five-and-a-half years with Leverkusen, he joined English club Tottenham Hotspur in July 2006, where he spent two years before moving to Manchester United. He played in his second Champions League final in 2009, during his side's 2–0 defeat against Barcelona. Berbatov is the first non-Englishman in Premier League history to have scored five goals in a single match, having done so in Manchester United's 7–1 win over Blackburn Rovers in November 2010

Berbatov was born to Ivan and Margarita Berbatov, both themselves professional athletes: Ivan was a footballer with Pirin and CSKA Sofia, while Margarita was ahandball player. His favoured team was the Italian club Milan, and he consequently modelled himself on Marco van Basten, the Dutch forward for that team. However, the 1996 European Championship, held in England, gave Berbatov a new role model; the 15-year-old Berbatov began to look up to the English front man Alan Shearer, who played for Newcastle United. Berbatov's mother later spoke of her son's teenage dream of playing for Newcastle United, and said that his admiration for Shearer was such that, during these years, he slept in a Newcastle shirt.

Berbatov made his debut for Bulgaria on 17 November 1999, aged 18, when he came on as a substitute for Aleksandar Aleksandrov in a 1–0 friendly loss against Greece. He scored his first goal for his country on 12 February 2000 in another friendly defeat, 3–2 against Chile, and represented Bulgaria at Euro 2004. This was the only major tournament he played at for his country, owing to the team's failure to qualify for other tournaments. He scored a hat-trick in the 6–2 home win in a 2010 World Cup qualification match against Georgia in October 2009, enabling him to bring his goal tally for the national side to 46 goals, just one short of the then all-time top scorer for Bulgaria, Hristo Bonev; after scoring two goals against Malta during a 4–1 friendly away win during the following month, he took the record.

Berbatov captained the team from 2006 until May 2010, when he announced his retirement from international football, leaving his tally for Bulgaria standing at 48 goals from 77 matches. In February 2012, newly appointed Bulgaria head coach Luboslav Penev revealed that Berbatov was willing to consider coming out of international retirement and participate in an upcoming friendly against Hungary. Berbatov eventually decided against accepting a call-up for the match, as he didn't feel that he was in top shape, but at the time did not rule out a return to the national side at some point in the future. In September 2012, he reconfirmed his international retirement.

Robert Dennis "Danny" Blanchflower (10 February 1926 – 9 December 1993) was a former Northern Ireland international footballer and football manager, andjournalist who captained Tottenham Hotspur F.C. during its double-winning season of 1961. He was ranked as the greatest player in Spurs history by The Times in 2009. He is remembered as one of the great tacticians in the history of the game, renowned for his passing, and as an outstanding right-half.

Blanchflower was born on 10 February 1926 in the Bloomfield district of Belfast, the first of five children born to John and Selina Blanchflower. His mother had played as a centre-forward on a women's football team. He was educated at Ravenscroft public elementary school and was awarded a scholarship to Belfast College of Technology.

His younger brother Jackie was a member of the Manchester United team involved in the Munich air disaster of 1958. The younger Blanchflower, who had won two league titles and had been capped 12 times by Northern Ireland, survived the crash but was injured to such an extent that he never played again.

He left early to become an apprentice electrician at Gallaher's cigarette factory in Belfast. He also joined the Air Raid Precautions (ARP) and in 1943 lied about his age in order to join the RAF. As a trainee navigator he was sent on a course to St Andrews University (where he acquired a lifelong love of golf) and in the spring of 1945 was posted to Canada for further training. By 1946, aged 20, he was back in Belfast, back at Gallaher's, and building a reputation as an outstanding footballer. While at St Andrews Blanchflower played for the University College Dundee football team which was coached by formerCeltic, Dundee United and Scotland trainer Jack Qusklay.

Anton Weinberg's 1985 Channel 4 documentary film The Keller Instinct featured an appearance by Blanchflower, who spoke approvingly of his late friend musicologist Hans Keller's advocacy of inventive, tactically creative football. He retired from his position as a writer for the Sunday Express in 1988.

On 1 May 1990, Tottenham held a testimonial match for him at White Hart Lane, but by this stage he was in the first stages of what would later be diagnosed as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. He was eventually placed in a Staines nursing home where he died as a result of pneumonia on 9 December 1993, aged 67

George Best (sometimes Geordie or Georgie Best) (22 May 1946 – 25 November 2005) was a Northern Irish professional footballer who played as a winger for Manchester United and the Northern Ireland national team. In 1968 he won the European Cup with United, and was named theEuropean Footballer of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year. He is described by the national team's governing body, the Irish Football Association, as the "greatest player to ever pull on the green shirt of Northern Ireland".

Born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Best began his club career inEngland with Manchester United, who had spotted his talent at the age of 15. He went on to see success with United, scoring 179 goals from 470 appearances over 11 years. His playing style combined pace, acceleration, balance, two-footedness, goalscoring and the ability to beat defenders. Best unexpectedly quit United relatively early in 1974 at age 27, but returned to football for a number of clubs around the world in short spells, until finally retiring in 1983, age 37. In international football, he was an automatic choice when fit, being capped 37 times and scoring nine goals from 1964 to 1977, although the team's performance never allowed his talent to be displayed in the finals of a European Championship orWorld Cup.

Such was Best's talent and charisma that he became one of the first celebrity footballers, but his subsequent extravagant lifestyle led to various problems, most notably alcoholism, which he suffered from for the rest of his adult life. These problems affected him on and off the field throughout his career, at times causing controversy. He often said of his career that "I spent 90% of my money on women, drink and fast cars. The rest I wasted" After football he spent some time as a pundit, but his financial and health problems continued into his retirement. He died in 2005, age 59, due to complications from the immunosuppressive drugs he needed to take after being controversially granted an NHS liver transplant in 2002. Best was married twice, to two former models, Angie Best and then Alex Best. His son, Calum Best, was born in 1981 from his first marriage.

Prior to his death, Best was voted 16th in the IFFHS World Player of the Century election in 1999 and was one of the inaugural 22 inductees into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002; in 2004 he was also voted 19th in the public UEFA Golden Jubilee Poll and named by Pelé as one of the125 best living footballers in the world. After his death, on what would have been his 60th birthday, Belfast City Airport was renamed the George Best Belfast City Airport as a "fitting and permanent tribute to his footballing brilliance." According to the BBC, Best was remembered by mourners at his public funeral held in Belfast as "the beautiful boy" [with a] "beautiful game". Antonio Félix "Tota" Carbajal Rodr?guez (born June 7, 1929 in Mexico City) is aMexican former football goalkeeper. He was also called "El Cinco Copas", in reference to his record of five World Cups played

Born in Mexico City, Carbajal became a professional footballer with the local Club Espa?a in 1948, after having been in the squad that participated at the Olympic tournament in 1948. After the disappearance of Espa?a in 1950, he joined Club Le?n, where he would remain until the end of his career.

One of the greatest players of all time to come from Mexico,Carbajal made his international debut in the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on June 24, 1950 against World Cup hosts Brazil. He was the youngest goalkeeper to play in that tournament, where he saw action in Mexico's three matches. He appeared in one match at the 1954 World Cup and in three at the 1958 tournament; at the 1962 World Cup in Chile, he became the first footballer ever to appear in four World Cups, also helping his team win its first ever World Cup match. When they defeated Czechoslovakia 3-1 in the first round. Four years later Carbajal established another mark with his fifth World Cup appearance. That record was equalled by German player Lothar Matth?us in 1998. In total, Carbajal appeared in 48 international matches for Mexico. In 11 World Cup matches from 1950 to 1966, he conceded 25 goals, a record that was tied by Saudi goalkeeper Mohamed Al-Deayea in 2002

After retiring as a player, he became a successful manager in the 1980s and 1990s with several teams: Club Le?n, Uni?n de Curtidores, and Morelia.

Hugo S?nchez M?rquez (born July 11, 1958), popularly nicknamedPentapichichi, or Hugol, is a Mexican football coach and former striker. He played for four European clubs, including Real Madrid. He was also a member of the Mexico national team, and participated in three World Cups.

As a coach, he won two championships as head coach of the club Pumas de la UNAM and briefly with Club Necaxa, both teams in the Mexican Primera Divisi?n. He also had a sixteen-month stint with the Mexican national team, but was fired on March 31, 2008. Hugo Sanchez has signed up to start coaching again, now in Europe, for UD Almer?a from the Spanish First Division starting December 29, in an attempt to save the team from descending to the 2nd Division by the Summer. He has succeeded in keeping UD Almer?a free from relegation from La Liga for the 2009–2010 season.

In 1999, the IFFHS voted him the 26th best footballer of the 20th century, and the best footballer from the CONCACAF region.

As a teenager, S?nchez played for the Mexico national football team in the1976 Summer Olympics. Having already played in over 80 international games, S?nchez signed as a youth player at the age of 18 for UNAM Pumas, a professional team representing Mexico's National University, where he completed a degree in Dentistry while keeping up his football career. That year, UNAM managed to get its first championship in theMexican Football League. Two years later, he became top-scorer in the league with 26 goals. In 1979, UNAM agreed to exchange players during the off-seasons with the San Diego Sockers of the North American Soccer League (NASL). The NASL played during the summer and the Mexican League played during the fall, winter and spring. UNAM loaned S?nchez to the Sockers in both 1979 and 1980 where he became a dominant striker for the Sockers, averaging nearly a goal a game.

S?nchez' five seasons with UNAM were the team's golden years. In his last season with the team, Hugo and UNAM won its second championship and the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

S?nchez retired from Spanish football on May 29, 1997, playing with Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium—the stadium that witnessed most of his glory throughout his career. His last official game was in the 1998 World Cup preliminaries where he just touched the ball as a symbol of his retirement.

His trademark was to perform a celebratory somersault after each goal he scored, honoring his sister, who was a gymnast and participated in the Montreal Olympics. He is also known for acrobatic goals, some involving his trademark windmill kick, a product of his own early training in gymnastics

Jared Francisco Borgetti Echavarr?a (born 14 August 1973) is a retired Mexicanfootballer.

Borgetti is the all-time leading goal scorer for the Mexican national team, with 46 goals. A prolific goal scorer at both club and national level, Borgetti was renowned for his heading ability. He is popularly known by his nickname of El Zorro del Desierto ("The Desert Fox") due to his first professional team and his birthplace. He is currently an analyst for ESPN Deportes for football matches and the show F?tbol Picante.

Borgetti began his young career with Atlas in the Primera Divisi?n de México on 6 March 1994, debuting in a 3–1 loss over Club América. After two successful seasons, he signed with Santos Laguna, where he claimed three golden boot titles for most goals in the season in his seven year participation with club. With Santos, he won two league championships. Borgetti later signed a one-year contract with promoted team Dorados de Sinaloa, where he stated he wanted to play in his home team, before joining Pachuca, where he had little activity due to the qualifying games for the World Cup.

On the international stage, Borgetti first played with Mexico on 5 February 1997 against Ecuador. He would not make his mark internationally, however, until the qualification campaign for the 2002 FIFA World Cup began in late 2000. After the qualification campaign proved successful for Mexico, Borgetti became a regular starter within the squad and went on to score goals for his country at the 2001 Copa América, the 2002 World Cup, and the 2004 Copa América.

Borgetti's most successful tournament was the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup. He scored three goals against Brazil and Germany and helped Mexico to a fourth place finish, and his skill of scoring from headers drew the attention of football pundits worldwide. He also provided a memorable moment of the tournament when he had to retake a penalty twice against Brazil due to various infractions. It was blocked on the third attempt, but he later scored the winning goal that resulted in a 1–0 upset. After these performances, Borgetti attracted attention from many foreign clubs, and chose a deal with Bolton Wanderers.

Borgetti has enjoyed notable success on both the club and international level. After the qualification campaign for the 2006 World Cup ended, Borgetti became his country's top goal scorer, surpassing both Luis Hern?ndez and Carlos Hermosillo with a record 46 goals in the 89 international appearances.

On 25 March 2007, Borgetti came off the bench, replacing Omar Bravo in a match against Paraguay. Borgetti scored two goals within three minutes. On 8 June 2007, Borgetti played in the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup, scoring two goals. He also scored a goal in the quarter-finals against Costa Rica. In the final against the United States, Borgetti injured himself, and could not participate in the 2007 Copa América, where the Mexican national team reached the third place in the Competition against Brazil and Argentina, beatingUruguay in the third place game of the Copa América.

Claudio "El Emperador" Su?rez S?nchez born December 17, 1968 in Texcoco) is a retired Mexican footballer. He last played for Chivas USA in Major League Soccer and an exhibition game on September 5, 2010 with theCarolina Railhawks versus the Pumas Morelos.

He has the record for most caps with the Mexico national team, as well as the world record for the most capped outfield player with 178 caps and joint world record for most caps of any player, which he shares with Saudi goalkeeper Mohamed Al-Deayea but both of them are in second place after Egyptian midfielder Ahmed Hassan.

Nicknamed El Emperador ("The Emperor"), Su?rez began his club career with UNAM Pumas, where he played from 1988 to 1996 where he became champion in 1991. He moved to Guadalajara as an important piece for the 1996 Apertura, and remained there for 3 years, through the 1999 Clausura where he became champion in the Verano 1997 tournament, and was called to the 1998 FIFA World Cup. After being in the All Mexican Team, as an important and solid defender he was transferred to Tigres.

Su?rez then moved on to UANL Tigres, where he played from 1999 to the end of 2005. He led the team's defense during that time, and was league runner-up twice, in 2001 and 2003. His last game with Tigres, and in the Mexican league, was a semi-final Cl?sico Regiomontano in which he was sent off in a controversial referee decision. Previous to this incident, he already had disagreements with the team's management. Tigre's directive organization had asked Suarez to retire for years and join the management, but Suarez had refused. Other differences in defensive style where also cause for conflict with the teams management. The semi-final was the last excuse for separation.

In 2006, he moved to Major League Soccer to play for Chivas USA.

On March 8, 2009 after negotiations with his contract fell, Suarez announced his retirement. However, on March 20, 2009, he decided to return to professional soccer for another year. He was the last active soccer player left from Mexico's 1994 FIFA World Cup squad until he announced his retirement on March 26, 2010.

On September 5, 2010, Su?rez came out of retirement to play for the Carolina Railhawks in an exhibition game with the Pumas Morelos.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (Xhosa pronunciation: born 18 July 1918) is a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, the first to be elected in a fully representative democratic election. His administration focused on dismantling apartheid's legacy, cutting poverty and inequality. Politically left-wing, he served as president of the African National Congress(ANC) political party from 1990 to 1999.

Born to the Thembu royal family, Mandela attended Fort Hare University and the University of Witwatersrand, studying law. Living in Johannesburg townships and becoming involved in anti-colonial politics, he joined the ANC, becoming a founding member of its Youth League. When the National Party government implemented apartheid in 1948, he rose to prominence in the ANC's 1952 Defiance Campaign, being elected president of the Transvaal ANC branch and overseeing the 1955 Congress of the People. Working as a lawyer, he was repeatedly arrested for seditious activities, and although initially committed to non-violent protest, he adopted a policy of violent resistance, co-founding the ANC's armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, in 1961. In 1962 he was arrested and convicted ofsabotage and other charges, and sentenced to life imprisonment. Mandela served 27 years in prison, many on Robben Island, while an international campaign lobbied for his release.

Released in 1990, Mandela led the ANC in negotiations with President F.W. de Klerkleading to apartheid's abolition and the establishment of democracy in 1994. In that year's elections, he led the ANC to victory. As president, he initiated the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to investigate past human rights abuses, while introducing policies aimed at combating poverty and inequality in South Africa. Refusing to run for a second term, and succeeded by his deputy Thabo Mbeki, Mandela became an elder statesman focusing on charitable work in combating poverty and HIV/AIDS.

Mandela has received international acclaim for his anti-colonial and anti-apartheid stance, having received over 250 awards, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize, and is held in deep respect within South Africa as the "Father of the Nation", where he is often known under his Xhosa clan name of Mandiba. Controversial for much of his life, critics denounced him as a terrorist for his involvement in Umkhonto we Sizwe.

Pierre Sanitarib Issa (born 11 September 1975 in Germiston, South Africa) is a former South African footballer of Lebanese descent.

After playing for semi-professional side Dunkerque, Issa started his professional career with Marseille in 1995 and went on to play in the 1999 UEFA Cup Final. He moved to Chelsea on loan in January 2001, although he did not play a game for the London club. He is best known in England for his spell with Watford in 2001–02. Signed by new manager Gianluca Vialli from Marseille, Issa only scored once, against Portsmouth. Issa was memorably dropped by his stretcher bearers after an injury in a home game against Birmingham City, and was put on the club's transfer list on 14 February 2002, only five months after he had signed for the club. He never played for Watford again, but played for his country at that summer's World Cup whilst still contracted to Watford. After leaving Watford, Issa signed for Olympic Beirut, but was released in the 2002–03 season. He signed for Ionikos of Greece and later forOFI Crete, also in Greece.

Issa played 47 times for South Africa since making his debut on 15 November 1997 against Germany. He has also captained his country. In the 1998 FIFA World Cup, he scored two own goals against France.

Jules François Bocandé, (25 November 1958 – 7 May 2012), was a Senegalesefootball striker.

Bocandé is regarded as one of West Africa's best footballers of all time and was named an African Football Legend by CAF in 2009

He was one of the first Senegalese footballers in France and was Ligue 1's top goalscorer in the 1985–86 season with 23 goals

Jules Bocandé participated with the Senegal national team in three editions of Africa Cup of Nations in 1986, 1990 and 1992.

He was the father of former FC Metz professional player Daniel Bocandé. He died in Metz at the age of 53 during an operation

Guy Roland Demel (born 13 June 1981) is an Ivorian footballer who plays for West Ham United as a defender. Demel can play in several positions including right back, centre back and right midfielder

Born in Orsay, Paris, Demel started his professional career in the French Ligue 2with Nîmes Olympique. He was signed by Arsenal spending one season in London without making a first team appearance before being transferred to Borussia Dortmund. He made his Bundesliga début in 2003 winning the Bundesliga and making UEFA Cup Final in his first season. Demel left Dortmund to join Hamburg in 2005, after struggling to hold down a first team place.

With Hamburg, Demel played regularly as both a right back and a midfielder. In May 2006, he signed a new contract with Hamburg, tying him to the club until 2010.

Demel was released by Hamburg at the expiry of his contract in 2011. He made 199 appearances for Hamburg including 52 in European football in the UEFA Cup,UEFA Europa League and the 2006–07 UEFA Champions League, scoring four goals.

He signed a two-year deal, with the option of a third, with West Ham on 31 August 2011. Due to injuries it was not until 29 November 2011, in a 2-0 away win against Middlesbrough, that Demel made his West Ham United debut.

In 2004, Demel, a French citizen, acquired an Ivorian passport. He has since been selected for the national team, playing at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations, and being named to the squad for the 2006 and 2010 World Cup finals. Demel announced his retirement from international football on 6 December 2012 confirming his wish to focus on his club career with West Ham United

Déguy Alain Didier Zokora (born on 14 December 1980 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast) is an Ivorian footballer who plays for Turkish club Trabzonspor.

Zokora started his career in Côte d'Ivoire at Académie MimoSifcom. He was offered a professional contract along with his younger brother, Armando, with Ivorian clubASEC Mimosas. Tragedy struck though as Armando drowned to death celebrating at the beach in Grand-Bassam; in memory of his brother and hero, Zokora has Armandtattoed on his right forearm.

In 2000 he moved abroad to play for Belgian team Racing Genk and won the Belgian Jupiler League during the 2001–02 campaign, as manager Sef Vergoossen was named coach of the year and Wesley Sonck won top goal-scorer honors. Zokora went on to feature in 126 matches for the club and was memorably part of the squad that recorded a 1-1 home draw with Real Madrid on 12 November 2002. In the summer of 2004 he went to play for AS Saint-Etienne in France.

Zokora joined Tottenham in the summer of 2006 following his performances for the national side at the World Cup in Germany. The deal was reported by media as being worth £8.2m. Shortly after joining the Premier League club, it was announced on 24 October 2006 that Zokora had contracted malaria after falling ill on the morning of a UEFA Cup group match against Be?ikta? in Istanbul. Zokora was in the hospital for four days and then spent a period of two weeks recovering,missing the win over Be?ikta?, two Premier League games and a Carling Cup fixture as well. It was announced on 31 October that Zokora had returned to training with first-team.

He won the 2008 Football League Cup Final with Tottenham, their first major title in 9 years, as a header from Jonathan Woodgate secured a 2-1 extra time victory over London rivals Chelsea. He was also part of the Tottenham side which returned toWembley Stadium the following year to play in the League Cup Final, this time against Manchester United. Tottenham lost this game on penalties after the sides drew 0–0 after extra time with Zokora playing the full 120 minutes. Zokora managed to score a penalty in the shoot-out against PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA 

Zokora played 102 international matches for the Côte d'Ivoire national football team and is there most capped player of all time. He scored his only goal at the international level in a 4-0 defeat of Botswana on 22 June 2008 that moved Côte d'Ivoire to the top of their group in World Cup qualifiers.

During his twelve years with the national side, Zokora helped Les Eléphants to their first two World Cup finals appearances in 2006 and 2010. On both occasions Côte d'Ivoire were unfortunately drawn into the supposed "Group of Death," valiantly bowing out in third place each time. In the 2010 edition of the tournament, Zokora was forced to play in a new position, center back, against Portugal to bolster and compact the defense against the strong attacking side; Zokora helped his side earn a 0-0 draw.

During the Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, Zokora said he would retire from international football should Côte d'Ivoire win the title. Zokora did in fact retire from international football on 28 February 2012, following the end of the tournament. But Les Elephantes went down in an 8-7 penalty shoot-out loss to Zambia in the Africa Cup of Nationsfinal.

Didier Yves Drogba Tébily (French pronunciation: born 11 March 1978) is an Ivorian footballer who plays as a centre forward for Shanghai Shenhua. He is the captain and all-time top scorer of the Côte d'Ivoire national football team(Ivory Coast). He is best known for his career at Chelsea, and has scored more goals for Chelsea than any other foreign player and is currently Chelsea's fourth highest goal scorer of all time. Following his career with Chelsea, in October 2012, he was voted by Chelsea supporters as the club's greatest ever player. His key attributes include his physical strength, ability in the air, and his ability to retain possession of the ball.

After playing in youth teams, Drogba made his professional debut aged 18 for Ligue 2 club Le Mans. A late bloomer, he signed his first professional contract aged 21; it was not until the 2002–03 season that he realised his potential, scoring 17 goals in 34 appearances in Ligue 1 for Guingamp. During the same season he made his first international appearance for Côte d'Ivoire, in September, and scored his first international goal the following February. He moved to Olympique de Marseille in 2003 for £3.3 million. His scoring success at Olympique de Marseille continued, finishing as the third highest scorer in Ligue 1 with 19 goals and helped the club to reach the 2004 UEFA Cup Final.

In the summer of 2004 Drogba moved to Chelsea for a club record £24 million fee, making him the most expensive Ivorian player in history. In his debut season he helped the club win their first league title in 50 years, and a year later he won another Premier League title. In 2006–07 Drogba scored 33 goals, won the Premier League Golden Boot and scored the winning goals in both the League Cup and FA Cup finals. He won the FA Cup for a second time in 2009, scoring the equaliser in the final, and in 2009–10 was instrumental in Chelsea clinching their first double, winning his second Golden Boot and scoring the only goal in the 2010 FA Cup Final. In March 2012, Drogba scored his 100th Premier League goal, the first African player to reach the milestone.

He then became the only player in history to score in four separate FA Cup finals, when he scored in Chelsea's win over Liverpool in the 2012 final. He made his last appearance for Chelsea in the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final, in which he scored an 88th minute equaliser and the winning penalty in the deciding shoot-out against Bayern Munich. Sir Alex Ferguson remarked: "As far as I was concerned, he [Drogba] won the Champions League for Chelsea."

A Côte d'Ivoire international since 2002, Drogba has captained the national team since 2006. He led the Côte d'Ivoire to the 2006 World Cup, their first appearance in the tournament, and also scored their first goal. He was named African Footballer of the Year in 2006 and 2009. Drogba was a part of the Côte d'Ivoire sides which reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2006 and 2012, but were beaten on penalties on both occasions. As of 2012, he is the Côte d'Ivoire's all-time top scorer.

Drogba is credited with playing a vital role in bringing peace to his country. After Côte d'Ivoire qualified for the 2006 World Cup, Drogba made a desperate plea to the combatants, asking them to lay down their arms, a plea which was answered with a cease fire after five years of civil war. Drogba later helped move an African Cup of Nations qualifier to the rebel stronghold of Bouake; a move that helped confirm the peace process. In September 2011, Drogba joined the Truth, Reconciliation and Dialogue Commission as a representative to help return peace to his home nation. His involvement in the peace process led to Drogba being named as one of the world's 100 most influential people by Time magazine for 2010

Gheorghe Hagi (Romanian pronunciation: born 5 February 1965 in S?cele) is a former Romanian footballer. He was one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe during the 1980s and 1990s and is considered the greatest Romanian footballer of all time. Galatasaray fans called him 'Commandante' (The Commander) and the Romanians called him 'Regele' (The King).

Nicknamed "The Maradona of the Carpathians", he is considered a hero in his homeland. He has won his country's "Player of the Year" award seven times, and is regarded as one of the best football players of the 20th century.

He played for the Romanian national team in three World Cups in 1990, 1994 and1998, as well as in three European Football Championships in 1984, 1996 and2000. He won a total of 124 caps for Romania, being ranked second after Dorinel Munteanu, and scored 35 goals, being ranked first.

In November 2003, to celebrate UEFA's Jubilee, he was selected as the Golden Player of Romania by the Romanian Football Federation as their most outstanding player of the past 50 years. Hagi is one of the few footballers to have played for both the Spanish rival clubs Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.

In March 2004, he was named among the top 125 living footballers by Pelé.

He started his career playing for the youth teams of Farul Constan?a in the 1970s, before being selected by the Romanian Football Federation to join the squad of Luceaf?rul Bucure?ti in 1980 for two years. In 1982 he returned to Constan?a, but one year later, aged 18, he was prepared to make the step to a top team. He was originally directed to Universitatea Craiova, but chose Sportul Studen?esc ofBucharest instead.

In the winter of 1987 Hagi was transferred to Romanian giants Steaua Bucure?ti as the team prepared for their European Super Cup final against FC Dynamo Kyiv. The original contract was for one game only, the final. However after winning the trophy, where Hagi scored the only goal of the game, Steaua did not want to release him back to Sportul Studen?esc and retained him. During his Steaua years (1987–1990), Hagi played 97 Liga I games, scoring 76 goals. He and the team reached the European Cup semifinal in 1988 and the final in the following year. Hagi and Steaua were the champions of Romania in 1987, 1988 and 1989 and as well as winning the Romania Cup in 1987, 1988 and 1989.

After the 1990 World Cup, he was signed by Real Madrid. The La Liga side paid $4.3 million to Steaua Bucure?ti for him. Hagi played two seasons with Real Madrid and then was sold to Brescia Calcio.

Hagi started the season 1992–1993 with Brescia Calcio but in the first season the club was relegated to Serie B; in the next season Hagi helped Brescia Calcio win the Italian Serie B and get promoted to Serie A. After performing memorably during the 1994 World Cup, Hagi was signed by FC Barcelona.

After two years at FC Barcelona, Hagi signed for Galatasaray S.K.. At Galatasaray, he was both successful and highly popular among the Turkish supporters. Hagi and manager Fatih Terim built a team that would win four consecutive league titles. Over the years, Galatasaray, led by Hagi, managed to win the UEFA Cup after defeating Arsenal in the finals. This was followed by the capture of theEuropean Super Cup with a historic win against Hagi's former club Real Madrid. Both feats were firsts, and remain unmatched in Turkish soccer history. The mass hysteria caused by these wins in Istanbul raised Hagi's popularity even further with the fans and made French ex-international Luis Fern?ndez to say that "Hagi is like wine, the older it gets, the better it is". In 2000, at the age of 35, Hagi had the best days of his career winning every possible trophy with Galatasaray. When he retired in 2001, he remained one of the most beloved players in the Turkish and Romanian championships.

Laszlo Boeloeni (also called Ladislau B?l?ni; born 11 March 1953 in Târgu Mure?) is aRomanian football manager and former player, who is the current manager of Qatar Stars League club Al Khor.

Born in Târgu Mure?, Romania to a Transylvanian Hungarian family from Târn?veni, B?l?ni's first team was Chimica Târn?veni. In 1970 he moved to ASA Târgu Mure?where he stayed until 1984, until he joined Steaua Bucure?ti, being part of the team which won the European Champions Cup in 1986 (despite missing his penalty in the shootout in the final) and the European Super Cup the following year. B?l?ni remained at Steaua until 1987.

In 1988, aged 35, B?l?ni left the country to play in Belgium at Racing Jet Bruxellesand then in France at US Créteil. He retired from professional football in 1992.

On 25 March 2008 he was decorated by the president of Romania, Traian B?sescuwith Ordinul "Meritul Sportiv" — (The Order "The Sportive Merit") class II for his part in winning the of 1986 European Cup Final.

As a football coach, B?l?ni started with French club AS Nancy, where he was head coach for several years. He promoted with the team in Ligue 1. In 2000 he was appointed as national team coach, but in the summer of 2001 decided to leave the job.

Then he joined Portugal's club Sporting Lisbon, where he won both the Portuguese championship and cup in his first year. He was fired at the end of the next season due to mediocre results. His legacy at Sporting was the introduction of youth team players such as Ricardo Quaresma, Hugo Viana and Cristiano Ronaldo into the senior's team starting lineup.

In 2003, he returned to France as manager of Stade Rennais; in 2005, he managed the team to their best position in the history (4th inLigue 1), and a subsequent UEFA Cup qualification.

In May 2006, B?l?ni signed a two-year contract with AS Monaco but was fired on 23 October for lack of results (Monaco being 19th out of 20 in the league by that date).

On 9 June 2008, Belgian team Standard Liège appointed B?l?ni as their new manager, as he succeeded Michel Preud'homme, who led the club to their first Belgian First Division title in 25 years (season 2007-2008). On 24 May 2009, he won the Belgian First Division title in his first season at Standard (season 2008-2009) after playing the championship play-off against Anderlecht. On 10 February 2010, B?l?ni resigned from his coaching position at Standard Liege.

On 29 May 2010, it was officially announced that B?l?ni signed a contract with United Arab Emirates side Al-Wahda. On 2 September 2010, Al-Wahda sacked B?l?ni, despite the team's 3–1 win over Ittihad Kalba.

On 2 January 2011, he was hired by RC Lens, on a one year contract, but he couldn't save the team from relegetion. B?l?ni was immediately released on June, and signed a two year contract with PAOK on 8 June 2011, following a short negotiation period. On 25 May 2012 PAOK released B?l?ni after a one-year cooperation.

It did not take long for him to find another club, as he was hired by Qatari club Al Khor on 21 June 2012

Ilie Dumitrescu (Romanian pronunciation: [i?li.e dumi?tresku]; born 6 January 1969 in Bucharest) is a Romanian former football player and coach, who was last manager of Steaua Bucure?ti. A tricky forward, he shot to fame when his frontline partnership with Gheorghe Hagi and Florin R?ducioiu led the Romania national team to the 1994 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal, eliminating Argentina en route.

Dumitrescu joined the Steaua Bucure?ti Academy in 1977 at the age of 8, making his way through all the youth teams and play for the first squad in April 1987. Even now he is renowned as the best player Steaua Bucure?ti Academy ever produced along with Dan Petrescu.

After making his debut in Divizia A he is loaned to FC Olt to gain more experience. At Steaua, a team which won the European Cup in the previous year was no room for an 18-year-old. But at FC Olt was a different story, as Dumitrescu did catch the first eleven from the very beginning, playing as left full back. This was not, however, a position he enjoyed, as he was a creative player. During his time with FC Olt, Mircea Lucescu the famous Romanian coach noticed him and predicted a fruitful career.

It was just like Lucescu said. Once returned to Steaua Bucure?ti, full with talent and ambition, he makes himself way to the first eleven at the age of only 19, becoming an important part of the squad, playing alongside big names such asMarius L?c?tu? and Gheorghe Hagi.

In 1989 he makes debut for Romania, being used as a substitute in a game against Greece. From there the 1990 FIFA World Cup was only one step away, an opportunity he could not miss.

Despite playing two games in Italy, Dumitrescu's services are not requested by a Western European club and he returned to play for his old team and, as captain, leads it to winning the championship in 1993 and playing in the quarterfinals of the Cup Winners' Cup in the same year.

1994 was a World Cup year and Dumitrescu was there, playing all the five games his team played in America and scoring two very important goals against Argentina in their famous 3–2 victory. The first after 11 minutes, a stunning free kick from a tight angle curled over the Argentine goal keeper. Minutes later Argentina had drew level through a penalty converted by Batistuta but slick passing in a counter-attack with Hagi resulted in another fine goal for Dumitrescu just 7 minutes after his first. Dumitrescu was also instrumental in the 3rd goal. He played the ball after a great run to Hagi who scored a vital goal which proved to be the winner. His performance opened the doors to the quarter-finals, the best performance Romania ever gained.

Anghel Iordanescu (Romanian pronunciation: born 4 May 1950 inIa?i) is a Major General and former Romanian professional football player and manager, currently a politician. In 2007 Iord?nescu retired from football, and the following February, after his predecessor resigned, he became a member of theRomanian Senate, sitting on the Social Democratic Party benches. On December 26, 2011, he became an independent senator, affiliated to the National Union for the Progress of Romania

Iord?nescu was a bright striker with a well-developed scoring technique, who scored many goals and helped the teams he played for achieve impressive performances. In Romania he played only for Steaua Bucure?ti, a team he joined as a youth in 1962, aged 12. Six years later he made his first appearance in Steaua Bucure?ti's first team, followed by his first appearance for Romania in 1971.

In Romania he played only for Steaua Bucure?ti between 1968 and 1982. During this period of time he scored a massive 155 goals, being the team's best scorer in its whole history.

With Steaua, Iord?nescu won two championships (in 1976 and 1978) and fourRomanian Cups (in 1970, 1971, 1976, and 1979). In 1981-82 he was Divizia A's top scorer.

In 1982, aged 32, he left Romania to play for OFI Crete in Greece under head coach Les Shannon, but returned to Steaua two years later to become the team's assistant coach. Together with Emerich Jenei, then head coach, he won the championship in 1985 and led the team to its European Cup triumph in 1986, playing as a substitute in the final against FC Barcelona.

Emerich Jenei was appointed as Romania's manager in the summer of 1986, leaving Iord?nescu as Steaua's new head coach. From his new position he led the team to victory in three championships (1987, 1988 and 1989) as well as three Romanian Cups in the same years. At the international level, Steaua and Iord?nescu reached the European Cup semifinal in 1988 and the final one year later.

In 1990 he left Steaua for the second time as he signed a two-year contract with the Cypriot team Anorthosis Famagusta. Released from this contract, he returned to Steaua in 1992 to lead the team to the Cup Winners' Cup quarterfinals in 1993 and then a new championship.

In the summer of 1993 he was asked to replace Cornel Dinu as Romania's coach and managed to qualify the team for the 1994 World Cup, where Romania reached the quarterfinals, the best-ever performance of Romanian football at the national team level.

He continued as Romania's coach after the World Cup and led the team to new qualifications, for Euro 1996 and the 1998 World Cup.

After losing against Croatia in the second round of 1998 World Cup, he resigned and took over the managerial position of Greece, from where he would be sacked in 1999, as he failed to qualify the team for Euro 2000.

In the 1999–00 season he was appointed as head coach of Al-Hilal, the Saudi Arabian club, where he won the Saudi Cup and the Asian Club Championship (the forerunner to the AFC Champions League).[3] Despite these performances he left the club to take over Rapid Bucharest, hoping to have the same kind of performances as he once had with Steaua. He led Rapid to the first round of the 2000–01 UEFA Cup, losing 1–0 on aggregate to eventual winners Liverpool. However, he was sacked after only three months in charge, causing him to sign with Al Ain FC from the United Arab Emirates helping them win the UAE President's Cup.

Romania failed to qualify for the 2002 World Cup and Iord?nescu was called to replace Gheorghe Hagi, therefore becoming the national football team's coach for the second time. His main objective was to qualify the team for the Euro 2004, but he failed to do so. Saying that there was no one else both better than he and available to take charge of the national team, the Romanian Football Federation gave him credit for the 2006 World Cup qualifying stage but after a poor performance in Armenia he was finally sacked.

After his second stint as team Romania's coach, he returned to Saudi Arabia, where he signed with Al-Ittihad and won his second AFC Champions League, in 2005 and the Arab Champions League, but one year later he was sacked after drawing with Al-Ettifaq.[6] Just as the 2006–07 UAE League started, Iord?nescu went back to coach Al Ain FC for a few months before announcing his retirement from professional football.
