José Nasazzi Yarza (May 24, 1901 – June 17, 1968) was the Uruguayan footballer who captained his country when they won the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930.
He was born in Bella Vista, Montevideo to Giuseppe, an Italian immigrant from Milan, and Mar?a from the Basque Country of Spain.
Nasazzi is regarded by many as Uruguay's greatest ever football player. He was known as "El Gran Mariscal" (The Great Marshal) and had already won the gold medal at the 1924and 1928 Olympic Games, as well as the Copa América in 1923, 1924 and 1926, by the time of the first World Cup.
During the World Cup tournament, Uruguay's only serious rivals were their neighborsArgentina. After defeating Peru and Romania in the first round, Uruguay defeated theYugoslavia 6-1 in the semi-finals to set up a final against Argentina. Although his team were 2-1 behind at half-time, Nasazzi rallied his teammates in the second half, leading them to a 4-2 victory and making himself the first captain to lift the Jules Rimet Trophy.
Although Uruguay refused to defend their title in 1934, Nasazzi won the Copa América again (in 1935), before retiring in 1937.
At club level, he played for Bella Vista, Lito and Nacional
Nasazzi's Baton is an unofficial title named after José. It is said to have been held by Uruguay after the first World Cup, and subsequently to have been taken over by any team to beat the holders over 90 minutes in a full international match. It is currently held bySpain. Nasazzi played with Uruguay from 1923 to 1937 earning 41 appearances.

José Santamaría
José Emilio Santamaría Iglesias (born 31 July 1929) is a Spanish-Uruguayanformer football player and coach. He is regarded by many as one of the greatestcentral defenders of all time. A strong, uncompromising player, known for his high stamina and consistency, he was indispensable for Real Madrid in “The First Decade Of Galaticos”.
He is one of the relatively few players to star for two national football teams.
Santamaría played in defence for Nacional de Montevideo and was first called up to play for the Uruguay national team for the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. He was selected to fill an inside-forward slot in the squad, but his club refused to let him join the squad on the grounds that he was a defender. Hence he missed Uruguay's second World Cup victory. Four years later though, he was an integral part of the Uruguay team at the World Cup finals in Switzerland. Convincing wins overScotland, Czechoslovakia and England were followed by semi-final defeat byHungary and a 3-1 loss to Austria in the third-place play off match. Two years later, he was a part of the squad that won the 1956 Copa America, giving Uruguay their 9th title.
Santamaría's performance in the World Cup had been enough to attract the attention of Real Madrid, to whom he transferred in 1957. Over the next 9 years, Santamaría played 337 official games for the club, winning three consecutive European Cups, five La Liga titles and the World Club Cup. Playing alongside such greats as Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskas, he brought much needed balance to an otherwise brilliant team. Earning himself the nickname ‘The Wall’ for his consistently superb defensive displays. He was also selected for the Spanish national team, and went on to play for them in the 1962 World Cup.
After his retirement, Santamaría briefly managed hosts Spain at the 1982 World Cup where they exited in the second round.
